Meet Dr Madina Palmos

Acupuncturist, Holistic Counselor, Herbalist

BSc Acupuncture (Hons) - International College of Chinese Medicine (UK)

◦ Chinese Herbal Medicine - Diploma in Chinese Herbal Medicine (Dip CHM, UK)

Medical Doctor (USSR), PhD in Dermatology

Holistic Counselling - (UK qualified)

" I have been working in medicine and healing since qualifying as a Medical Doctor in 1990.
I was living in the USSR, and decided to continue studying, while working part time as a General Practitioner, and eventually got my PhD in Dermatology. Through that all, I have always had an interest in "alternative" healing. After moving to the UK, I studied Acupuncture full time and got a BSc (Hons) Degree in Acupuncture at ICOM (East Grinstead).

In my treatments, my goal is to identify and treat the root cause of a patient’s health concerns and symptoms. Treating the cause enables the body to truly repair and itself. I am also aware that mental health affects our physical health, so I like to incorporate holistic counselling methods in my sessions if needs be at no extra cost, and have more recently added the amazing world of Chinese Herbal Medicine to help my patients.

The aim of Chinese Herbal Medicine is to help you regain balance in your body and to strengthen your body’s resistance to disease. Acupuncture in conjunction with a Herbal Medicine treatment is most effective as the combination expands the range and increases the potency of the treatment.

I love medicine, and this lifelong passion will always lead me to the best and most comprehensive way to care for my patients. I look forward to helping you on your journey to radiant health and well-being."

"Acupuncture and Herbal Medicines deal with the actual cause of your condition, not just the symptom - as is often the case in Western Medicine."

We eat and breathe to supply our bodies with energy. The flow of energy throughout our bodies, through every organ and cell is at the core of our health. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine together form a highly effective method of unblocking those energy pathways which have been causing us pain and illness.

These blockages may be caused by emotional and physical stress, injury, infection, a poor diet and even our genetic make-up.

The point of my treatments is to get to the root cause of the issue, and in doing that, re-balance the energy flow in your body. This will result in an improvement in your main ailment, but often it will also affect your general well-being. Sometimes other health issues will simultaneously improve as a result of the treatments.

After a treatment, patients often feel relaxed and rejuvenated with partial or total relief of major symptoms.

If required, I offer counselling to my patients during the acupuncture session without additional cost. Often physical ailments are reflections of internal, unresolved issues.

Chinese Herbal Medicine is a powerful addition to the healing process as these remedies have the effect of strengthening the potency of acupuncture as well a to entrench the benefits gained through the treatment.

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and have little resemblance to the clinical needles used for injections and blood tests. Most patients who attend Acupuncture will often be unaware that the needle has been inserted and when the needle reaches the desired point (just below the surface of the skin), there is generally a sensation often described as a dull ache or tingling.

Most people find that acupuncture makes them feel relaxed and they often leave the treatment room feeling very calm. In some cases people describe that they feel energetic and lighter on their feet, and its also common to see patients starting to laugh or cry during treatment as held-in emotions are often released. This will be seen as a good sign by your acupuncturist who will welcome this emotional response to treatment.

The frequency and number of sessions that you require will depend on your individual condition. Initially you will be encouraged to come for weekly sessions and as you start to feel better, the treatments will be spread out. Some people feel benefits after the first or second treatments but long-standing and chronic conditions may need more time to improve. Once your health has stabilised you may wish to come for treatment as a preventative method and as a way to maintain good health.

The results of two independent surveys published in the British Medical Journal in 2001 (MacPherson et al, White et al, both BMJ September 2001) concluded that the risk of serious adverse reaction to acupuncture is extremely rare. The needles used are single-use, sterile, and disposable and the stringent hygiene practices recommended by the British Acupuncture Council are observed at all times to ensure safety. These stringent hygiene practices have been approved by the Department of Health, and provide protection against the transmission of infectious diseases.

Acupuncture will not interfere with any western medical treatment but we do encourage you to advise your doctor that you are attending the acupuncture practice. We always recommend that you continue to take any prescriptions given to you and these should not be changed without your doctors consideration. However if your symptoms improve with acupuncture treatment then we will actively encourage you to discuss your prescription requirements with your doctor.

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years as a drug free treatment that helps women cope with the demands of pregnancy. Most often women will attend an acupuncture practice for support with morning sickness, tiredness and back pain. If you intend to go to an acupuncturist and you suspect you are pregnant, then do let them know as your acupuncturist will need to change the treatment strategy to support your pregnancy.

The first appointment takes longer because this is where I ask many questions about your health history, and then I give the first treatment. In the follow-up treatments, there will be a brief chat to find out how you have been since the previous session, followed by a full 40-60 minute treatment.

If at all possible, we would advise wearing loose fitting clothing for your sessions. If this is not possible, we can use towels to cover you as appropriate if you need to remove any clothing. It is also advisable not to eat a large meal before your treatment, or to drink alcohol or strong caffeinated drinks that might interfere with your ability to relax during treatment.

First of all we will want to find out about your main health concerns. We will also want to ask you some general questions about your health, so that we can build a holistic diagnosis focused around your main concerns. Then we will be able to work out an acupuncture treatment plan tailored to your individual needs, that may also include lifestyle recommendations (e.g. diet and exercise) to help you to maximise the benefits from your treatment.

The sessions cost £50.   For the same one price, you may receive a combination of treatments personalised to help with your condition, needs and preference.

East Grinstead Acupuncture Clinic is proud to be the one and only classically trained acupuncturist in Sussex who offers (proper) multi laser treatment. The laser equipment we use has 10 separate, independent laser probes to stimulate acupuncture points anywhere on your body.

If you have always wanted to try acupuncture but are afraid of needles then this is the treatment for you. The same acupuncture points are used that would be used during traditional acupuncture. The light emitted is a low-energy red-spectrum laser beam. This painlessly and safely provides an action that is as close to that of a needle as you can get.

Acupuncture points are effectively an access point to the Chi or life-energy meridians that run through the body. By stimulating these in the right way, we can help ensure that the Chi flows freely for a therapeutic or healing effect. Additionally, infra-red laser light is very well known and understood in the world of physiotherapy as having tremendous abilities to enhance the healing process of Musculo-skeletal issues... an added benefit over traditional acupuncture.

During a Laser Acupuncture treatment, you will usually feel nothing at all because the wavelengths of the lasers create no heat or friction. Because of this, Acupuncture using light is a great way for children and needle-averse adults to experience the benefits of acupuncture without anxiety.

Laser Acupuncture does not hurt at all. The only sensation you will feel from the lasers is mild warmth. Laser acupuncture is perfect for children, elderly people, and those who don't like needles.

Most people find that acupuncture makes them feel relaxed and they often leave the treatment room feeling very calm. In some cases people describe that they feel energetic and lighter on their feet, and sometimes the treatment will evoke laughter or tears, both of which are healthy emotional releases.

The frequency and number of sessions that you require will depend on your individual condition. For Musculo-skeletal issues and all those where condition of the blood would enhance treatment, it's advised to come twice a week for 4 sessions and then spread them out as you start to feel better. Laser treatments take less time than treatment using needles, so the follow-up treatments are less expensive than the initial session. Once your health has stabilised you may wish to come for treatment as a preventative method and as a way to maintain good health.

Yes. The low level Class 3B lasers used for acupuncture use infra red light. The beams can cause no harm to you and you will not feel the light as it penetrates your body to stimulate acupuncture points. If the acupuncture includes the facial area, you will need to wear special laser proof goggles to make sure the eyes are fully protected.

Laser Acupuncture is safe to use on pregnant women, though, as with Traditional Acupuncture, care will be taken to avoid treatment to certain vulnerable areas. Most often women will attend an acupuncture practice for support with morning sickness, tiredness and back pain. It is important that you let me know if you are or suspect you are pregnant, so the treatment can be modified to support you and your pregnancy.

Laser Acupuncture will not interfere with any western medical treatment but we always recommend that you continue to take any prescriptions given to you and these should not be changed without your doctors consideration. However if your symptoms improve with acupuncture treatment then we will actively encourage you to discuss your prescription requirements with your doctor.

Laser Acupuncture is as good as Traditional Acupuncture for many of the same conditions, though there are still some situations when the use of a needle is the recommended approach.

There are a very wide range of disorders that can be treated with Laser Acupuncture, from migraines to arthritis, from addictions to menopausal issues. Though Laser Acupuncture is relatively modern (about 60 years old) all our patients will receive a full Oriental Medicine diagnosis before treatment begins.

If you or your children prefer a completely painless, needle-free option, let me know and we can discuss the way forward.

The first appointment takes longer because this is where I ask many questions about your health history before giving you the first treatment. In the follow-up treatments, there will be a brief chat to find out how you have been since the previous session, followed by a 20 to 50 minute treatment depending on whether you are having lasers only or lasers followed by cupping and or a massage.

Chinese herbal medicine is a traditional system of health care that has been used in China for thousands of years. It is based on the use of natural substances, plants and minerals, to promote health and treat illness. These substances are combined into formulas that are tailored to the specific needs of individual patients.

Chinese herbal medicine understands that illness is caused by imbalances or blockages in the flow of energy (known as Qi) in the body. Herbs are used to address these imbalances, regulate the flow of Qi, and restore balance to the body. Practitioners consider the whole person, including physical, emotional, and environmental factors, when diagnosing and treating health problems.

Once a diagnosis has been made, I select individual herbs and quantities that are best suited to address the my patient's specific needs and then combine the herbs in a formula. The formula may contain anywhere from 3 to 20 different herbs and may be adjusted over time as the patient's condition improves or changes.

The formula is then prepared by a separate, licensed pharmacist, who ensures that the exact dosage and quality of each herb is used. The formula is then taken as a decoction (boiled tea).

The effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicine is believed to be due to the unique properties and interactions of the individual herbs in a formula, as well as the specific combination and proportion of herbs used. Herbs may act on different systems in the body, such as the digestive system, circulatory system, or immune system, to produce therapeutic effects.

Chinese herbal medicine and Western medicine are two distinct systems of healthcare with different approaches to diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of illness and health.

Western medicine is based on the use of drugs and medical procedures to diagnose and treat specific symptoms and diseases. It is often focused on identifying and treating symptoms rather than healing the underlying cause of a health problem.

Chinese herbal medicine, on the other hand, is based on the concept of balance and harmony within the body and the influence of external factors such as diet, lifestyle, and environment. It is more holistic in nature, taking into account the individual's overall health and well-being, and aims to restore balance to the body. In Chinese herbal medicine, multiple herbs are combined into formulas tailored to the specific needs of each patient, and the formulas may change over time as the patient's health improves or changes.

Yes, if the herbs are prescribed by a fully qualified herbalist, and if the herbs are packaged by a licensed pharmacy, they will be safe to take.

Usually a course is to take one sachet of herbs, once a day for 30 days, but this depends on the condition being treated. Some treatments may be long term while others may need just two weeks of herbal medicine.

The herbs vary in taste, but the most common comment is they taste like bitter coffee. The best way to consume them is to mix the herbs with 2/3 of a mug of boiling water, stir for a couple of minutes, wait until it is lukewarm, then stir all the undissolved matter up and gulp it all down. That way you get the most benefit from the herbs and don't have to taste them for very long.

Western medicine and Chinese herbal medicine can complement each other and be used together, with the goal of providing a comprehensive approach to health and healing. For example, a patient undergoing Chemo or Radiation cancer treatment can benefit from herbs which tonify and strengthen the immune system.

In general, side effects from taking herbal treatments are very rare, so it is important to tell me what other medications you taking, and also what allergies you have so I can be sure a particular herb will be right for your condition.

There are only a few pharmacies in the UK who are licensed to package and sell herbal formulae. One has to be a licensed and insured herbal medicine practitioner to be able to purchase herbs from these pharmacies. One should never try to buy online from some private person as there is really no way of knowing what you are actually buying.

A Chinese herbal formula for a patient is determined through a comprehensive assessment of the patient's symptoms, health history, and overall condition. This process will involve various diagnostic methods such as pulse and tongue diagnosis, observation of the patient's physical appearance, and inquiry into the patient's lifestyle and habits.

Based on this diagnosis, the practitioner selects individual herbs that are best suited to address the patient's specific needs and combines them in a formula. The formula may contain anywhere from 3 to 20 different herbs and may be adjusted over time as the patient's condition improves or changes.

Finally, the formula is prepared by a licensed pharmacist, who ensures that the correct dosage and quality of each herb is used. The formula is then taken as a decoction (boiled tea).

It's important to consult with a licensed healthcare provider for accurate information and to determine if Chinese herbal medicine is safe and appropriate for you.

The herbs themselves will be bought from an outside company, Balance Pharmacy. You pay for the herbs directly... so there is no profit benefit for me - the only benefit is the pleasure of seeing your health improve!
